As we begin the month of May, what a better way to start the month than learning all about this month's birthstone… Emeralds.

Emeralds are the rarest gemstones and are typically mined in Colombia, Brazil, Afghanistan and Zambia. It is one of the four recognised precious gemstones alongside ruby, sapphire, and diamond. Emerald is also made from beryl just like the gemstone aquamarine and gets its green colouring from trace amounts of chromium and/or vanadium.

The first known emeralds were mined in Egypt around 1500 BC and were recorded and well documented as one of Cleopatra's favourite stones.

For Diamonds, clarity is a main factor in the price of an individual stone, however inclusions in emeralds are often viewed as desirable. They can form gorgeous patterns, and can be so unique that they can actually increase value. Inclusions in Emeralds can also be assessed with the naked eye rather than under magnification like Diamonds.

Perhaps it comes back to their stunning green colour but emeralds have been mined for a VERY long time and are associated with a great list of mystical powers and uses!

Emeralds were considered a symbol of eternal youth by the ancient Egyptians who liked to be buried with them. Romans thought gazing into them aided in relieving stress and eye strain. Green was also the color for Venus, the Roman Goddess of love and beauty. Ancient legends also claim that placing an emerald under the tongue would reveal one's truths, allow a person to foresee their future and protect against evil. (Micheli does not recommend trying this at home).

Following suit, in cultures and practices of today Emerald is a stone that is seen to revive passion in multiple avenues. If you wish to ‘attract romantic love’, it is suggested to wear or carry Emerald out of sight and near the heart. The beautiful birthstone of May also promotes positive self-esteem and encourages restoration of confidence.

While Emerald has a soothing ability, it has an invigorating effect on thought, reflection, and philosophy. It is believed to be a great gem or crystal for activating artistic creativity, and for bringing focus and intensity to one’s lifework.
