Why the Cut of a Diamond is Important
But which of the four C’s is the most important? When you consider that most people who look at your ring won’t be doing so through a magnifying glass, it is important to ensure that your diamond is brilliant from the first glance.
An excellent cut will bring the best out of the stone by amplifying and enhancing its features. An excellent cut is what makes a good stone look spectacular. A diamond with good clarity but a poor cut will appear dull, but an average clarity stone that has been impeccably cut will still achieve an incredible sparkle.
An excellent cut will enhance the traits of the stone by increasing the light that is reflected by the diamond (Brilliance), making the light appear as flashes of colour (Fire), and intensifying the sparkle when the diamond moves (Scintillation).
These are the traits that most people use to ascertain the quality of the diamond. Diamonds are judged visually, and when people look at a diamond, it is instinctive to move it and see how it responds to the light. Compliments are usually paid based on brilliance, fire and scintillation, which is why it is important to consider the cut of your diamond above all else.
We are thrilled to announce the unveiling of our new brand Passion8 Diamonds at Micheli Jewellery – a brand that prides itself on the perfect cut, with 8 perfect hearts and 8 perfect arrows as the minimum standard. Using the art of mathematics, this cut allows light to go through the stone and back out of the top which gives it the appearance of being 2-3 shades whiter and brighter than other diamonds which lose light through the bottom of the stone.
Why don’t all companies cut their diamonds this way? Firstly, less than 1% of the world’s diamonds make the grade to become a Passion8 Diamond. Not to mention this process of perfection takes up to five times longer and can mean a loss of up to 10% more rough diamond during cutting. It is not the most cost-effective technique, but the final result is the perfect brilliant diamond with a sparkle like no other. By choosing only the best stones and optimising their natural attributes through cut, Passion8 are able to present the brightest diamonds you will ever see.
