There are two versions of personalised jewellery. One is a name on a thin chain that oxidises within a year. The other is something conceived with intention, around a stone that means something to you, a letter that's yours, a design created specifically for the way you wear jewellery.
The difference isn't just quality, though quality is part of it. The difference is in whether the piece was genuinely made around you, or simply had your name stamped onto something generic.
We make the first kind. And when it's done properly, the result is something you'll wear every single day.
Why a Custom Personal Piece Hits Differently
When a piece of jewellery is designed around something that belongs to you - your birthstone, your initial, a stone you've inherited, a moment you want to mark, it carries a meaning that even a beautiful off-the-shelf piece can't replicate. You're not just wearing jewellery. You're wearing something that says something specific about who you are, where you've come from, or what matters to you.
And a custom piece takes that further still. Because it's not just personal in what it represents. It's personal in how it was made. Every proportion, every design decision, every material choice was made with you in mind. There's nothing else like it, because there's no one else like you.
Birthstones: Designed Around the Stone You Actually Love
A birthstone shouldn't feel like an accident of the calendar. The best birthstone pieces are chosen for the stone itself. Its depth, its character, the way it looks against your skin, and then designed around it, so the setting is an extension of the stone rather than a container it happens to sit in.
At Micheli, you see the stone before anything is designed or set. We source options that match what you're looking for. The right colour saturation, the right size, the right cut, and you hold them in person, in natural light, before any decisions are made. Once you've chosen your stone, we design the piece around it from the ground up.
This matters more than it might seem. A sapphire has different proportions to a ruby. An oval has different requirements to a cushion cut. When a setting is custom-designed around your specific stone, rather than your stone being pressed into a standard mount, the result is a piece that's structurally sound, visually coherent, and built to hold that stone securely for decades.
We have four in-house jewellers in our Melbourne studio, and our setters are trained to our own standard. Every stone is set with enough metal covering each prong to last the lifetime of the piece. That's not a small detail. It's the difference between a piece you can pass down and one you have to repair.
Initial Pieces: Simple, Considered, and Made to Last
An initial chain is one of the rare pieces that manages to be both completely timeless and entirely individual. Worn alone, it's quiet and precise. Layered, it becomes part of a visual language that's your own.
When we make an initial piece for you, we're not pulling a pendant from a drawer and attaching it to a standard chain. We're discussing the metal, the weight, the style of the letter, the length and thickness of the chain, and making decisions based on how you actually wear jewellery and what you want this piece to do.
The result is something that fits your wardrobe and your life, not just a catalogue description. And because it's made to our standards, with palladium-based white gold where relevant, with the right gold weight, with a chain that's built to be worn daily. It will still look and feel exactly right in thirty years.
Giving Something You Already Love a New Life
Some of the most personal custom pieces we make at Micheli don't start with a blank page. They start with something a client already owns, a stone that was her grandmother's, a ring that no longer suits her, a piece with genuine sentimental weight that deserves to be worn rather than kept in a box.
We redesign and repurpose pieces regularly, and it's some of the most meaningful work we do. The brief is always the same: take something with history and make it something you want to put on every day. Sometimes that's a new setting for an existing stone. Sometimes it's a complete redesign. We'll tell you honestly what's possible and what we'd recommend, and then we'll make it.
Start With What's Yours
If you have a stone in mind, a piece to repurpose, a vague sense of something you've never quite found, or a very clear idea of exactly what you want, a consultation is the place to start. Bring whatever you have. We'll take it from there and design something that's genuinely, specifically yours.
